The winners of the poll received recognition in the December issue of PDD, and will receive an award from the magazine at the 2010 IDA Expo in Las Vegas.

“‘People committed to customers and the industry’ is the cornerstone of the Clopay mission,” says John Palazzolo, vice president of sales and marketing for Clopay Building Products. “It is rewarding to have members of the industry recognize the hard work and dedication of our team and confirms that we are accomplishing our goal to provide the best garage door products and service in the building products sector.”

“Manufacturers and distributors work very hard to establish positive relationships with their customers,” added Lauren Vasquez, Editor for PDD. “This poll shows that their hard work is noticed and appreciated by dealers, who were able to voice their opinion by voting for the Best Customer Service, Best Residential Operators and Best Commercial Doors, to name just a few of our categories.”

“PDD is thrilled to recognize all of our winners,” said Mike Saxby, Group Publisher for PDD. “Nearly 3,000 votes were received from industry professionals, and we were delighted at the overwhelming response from our readers.”

Are You Thinking About Choosing A Garage Door

July 23, 2009

Your garage door is one of the most important features of your home’s exterior. It is the largest movable object on your home. But it is also equally important from an interior point of view. Therefore, it is wise to consider several factors before purchasing a garage door. In today’s world of ever rising heating costs, it is important to purchase a garage door with a high R value (resistance to heat flow). This may cost a little more initially, but will pay for itself in no time as a result of fuel savings. It is a good idea to buy the highest R value that you can afford. If you have plans on heating and / or cooling our garage this may be well worth the money. Keep in mind the tax incentive a savings of up to $1,500 for some select garage doors purchased through December 31, 2010.
A garage door can help to improve the overall facade of your home. Because garage doors now come in a wide variety of styles and colors, a garage door purchase can involve making quite a few choices. The style of your home will influence your options to a large extent. This means selecting a corresponding panel style. Garage door panel styles range from “flush” , “raised panels” all the way to more elaborate panel styles, Including wood, wood appliqué, copper clad, Exquisite and ideal faux barn doors or old country doors complimented with exterior ornamental hardware, faux wood paint finishes. And more coming out at the end of summer, the FeTerra and the Canyon Ridge

Garage doors are now offered in a variety of fade resistant colors to complement your home. When considering a garage door color, bring home several sample color chips square of actual garage door material. Typically the color of the garage door will match the trim color of your home, but this is not a hard and fast rule.

Windows can add to the aesthetic appeal of a garage door and the front of your home. These will reduce the R value, but will add some light into the garage. The glass for the windows also comes in a variety of styles, and the choice of glass may affect the overall cost of the door. Window designs range from acrylic leaded and beveled to frosted leaded and beveled to simple snap-in styles. The snap-in window designs also come in a variety of colors or they can be painted. The springs and hardware usually have a separate warranty period from the actual doors. In general, doors that are guaranteed forever are usually made better. This can be a selling feature when it is time to move.

When purchasing a replacement garage door, it is imperative to consider whether your existing garage door opener will be sufficient to open the new garage door. Some of the new models of doors are heavier than older models due to stronger steel, wood and insulation.

There is a benefit to having a garage door company replace the opener and door at the same time, so that it will be the company’s liability to fix future problems of any type. There are basically four types of drives for garage door openers: belt, chain, screw drive and jack shaft. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Most of the differences lie in the quietness of operation and the cost.

So, if you’re looking to replace your garage door and or your garage door opener, contact a reputable dealer. Quick Reminder

July 11, 2009

Customers who purchase a new Clopay door have a chance to win $250 when they upload “before and after photos” of their garage makeover to the Before and After Contest gallery at www.clopaydoor.com
Homeowners are asked to include a brief explanation about why they replaced their garage door, what inspired their door design choice (perhaps a suggestion from a design savvy dealer), what friends and family are saying about their home’s new look, and most importantly, who they purchased their door from.
Clopay then e-mails them a link to forward to friends, family and neighbors encouraging them to visit the site and vote for their home. The “before and after” with the highest rating wins! (if more than one entry has the same rating then the winner is the highest rating and the most votes). The dealer who installed the winning door gets $100 debit card!
We currently have 6 entries to our competition. A picture definitely tells a story with the amazing transformations made to these homes with their new Clopay door(s). Each entry clearly displays where the door was purchased and who installed it. With over 100,000 unique visitors to the site every month this is a cost effective and easy way to advertise your dealership.
Door Imagination System
Since launching the on-line door imagination system in mid-February, 10,000 homes have been uploaded. 1,600 of those homes have been saved to the My Folder feature on the site (which enables users to share their images with friends, family or you, via e-mail). The remaining 8,400 have been printed by the consumer to either share with others or take directly to their local dealer showroom.
Clopay Garage Doors Has Fans on Facebook and Followers on Twitter. Have you joined?
Online social media sites and services like Facebook and Twitter are where consumers go for content and communities. They do not typically congregate on manufacturer websites.
Today’s consumer doesn’t want to hear from us via marketing messages. Instead, they’re more likely to be influenced by other customers.
Facebook eliminates information gathering barriers and gives us “permission” to reach our customers as well as their network of friends. No longer do we have to rely exclusively on press releases, our web site and advertising to distribute information. We can send FANS instant updates on topics we know they care about. Garage Door Safety Checklist

April 13, 2009

SPRINGS AND CABLES

Installation safety containment cable On all Clopay torsion spring doors, the spring is installed around the torsion shaft so that, if a spring should break, it cannot snap free and cause damage or injury.

Conventional garage door bottom brackets are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury if deliberately or accidentally loosened or removed by someone inexperienced in garage door installation or maintenance. Clopay brand garage residential steel doors feature our patented Safe-T-Bracket™ which, under normal circumstances, cannot be removed while the door is under tension, thus significantly reducing the risk of serious injury.

Are you able to loosen the bottom brackets of the garage door?

Have you checked the spring on your garage door?
Beware of old springs. Keep in mind that garage door springs are tightly wound and under high tension. Eventually, all springs will wear out and break, even high quality steel springs like those used by Clopay. A breaking spring that is not properly contained could lash out and strike property or people. Properly installed Clopay doors have containment cables on extension springs and the shaft on the torsion spring will contain the spring on these types of doors. If you have an older garage door, be certain your springs are inspected by a professional installer and replaced if needed. If your door has two springs, replace both, even if one is not broken. This will not only prevent any damage caused by the breaking of the second spring, but also keep your door working efficiently.

Installing Torsion SpringAre there any frayed or have worn strips hanging loose on the spring system?
If the cables that attach from the spring system to the bottom bracket on either side of your garage door have frayed or have worn strips hanging loose, your cables are in danger of breaking, which could cause serious injury or property damage. Have the cables inspected immediately by a trained professional who is aware of the potential dangers from spring tension.

Is it a safety concern if the springs are noisy?
Sometimes older springs become squeaky or make a chattering noise. The noise is caused by the spring coils rubbing against one another. This is not a safety concern and can be corrected with a spray-on lubricant.

To ensure safe installation, are the services of a professional installer required for standard torsion spring door installation?

Manual winding of a torsion spring during installation or adjustment is extremely difficult and potentially dangerous. Torsion spring garage doors should be installed only by trained professionals.
