Garage Door Company Leaves Customer Hanging

May 13, 2010

Patricia Spellman paid $500 down for a new garage door in January. Its now May and her old garage door is still there and can’t be opened. Spellman said, “Rain, sleet snow and hail and I can’t protect my vehicle because I have to park it outside.”

Spellman wrote Garage Door Systems of Bellevue a $500 check four months ago. Patricia said, “They cashed it within four days.” Since then she’s made up to 35 calls to the company with no new door or any indication when she might get one.

Garage Door Systems has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB has received 15 complaints the past three years, most of them from customers who put money down but didn’t receive their garage doors.

After a Six on Your Side investigation last June, Garage Door Systems did put in one garage door and issued a refund to another customer.

This spring it’s a different story for Patricia Spellman with no door or refund.

Patricia said, “I googled them after the fact and found complaints and stories they had done this is the past. So do your research.”

Her contract listed three phone numbers for Garage Door Systems. Two have been disconnected. A message left on the third number hadn’t been returned.

Clopay Ultra-grain Avante Collection

April 28, 2010

Clopay Building Products’ contemporary glass and aluminum Avante Collection door with the new ultra-grain faux woodgrain print finish has been named one of the “Best New Exterior Products” of 2008 by Custom
Builder magazine. According to the company, ultra-grain delivers the best of both worlds: the realism
of wood with the low maintenance benefits of insulated steel. But unlike real wood, it is UV resistant and impervious to moisture, so it won’t fade, rot, split, shrink, separate, or crack. The Avante coating is manufactured utilizing a ‘dye-sublimation’ process analogous to the making of a tattoo. A base coat is applied and then a high definition wood grain pattern is baked in creating a layered wood grain pattern
as deep as the coating itself. Clopay has invested in a system that prints the grain in two directions, both
horizontally and vertically, following the stiles and rails, for a more authentic natural wood appearance.
The result is an extremely durable coating. No special maintenance is required to preserve the finish beyond standard garage door recommendations to wash and rinse the surface periodically.
Two colors are available – light cherry and dark cherry.

What’s headroom, backroom and sideroom?

April 10, 2010

Headroom is the amount of space inside the garage between the top of the garage door and the ceiling. A more accurate way to measure headroom is measure the distance from the floor to the ceiling. Backroom is the inside length or depth of the garage, from front to back. Sideroom is the distance between the sides of the garage door and the side walls of the garage.

Garage Door Balance

October 7, 2009

THE GARAGE DOOR BALANCE TEST:
A garage door is only going to work with an opener as well as it works for you manually. When a garage door is disconnected from its opener it should be easy to work by hand. If your garage door is out of balance in either direction it will stress out your opener. Out of balance door will decrease the life span of your opener dramatically.

FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE SECTIONAL GARAGE DOORS:
First make sure the garage door is closed. Then locate your emergency disconnect (find the pull cord) on the operator. Pull lightly to disconnect the traveler lock. Now you’re ready to work the garage door manually. (PLEASE be careful not to put your fingers in between the sections). While standing inside the garage, please stand facing the middle of the garage door. Now that you’re at the middle, slide your hands under the bottom of the door. (Unless there is a handle available, use the handle). Next you should try to manually open garage door. You should be able to work the door with little to no effort. The door should easily stop almost anywhere in its tracks.

Signs of a door out of balance will be as follows: a door will not sit evenly on the floor or does not glide easily up and down the track and the door will have a tendency to not stay open and keeps drifting down. Out of balance door will cause wear and tear on your garage door opener. Springs are dangerous and should only be adjusted by a professional. If you find or notice any of these issues your door needs to be adjusted. Contact Cookson Door Sales of Arizona for service. Home owners who live outside of Arizona should contact a local garage door repair service.

Why do I Need A New Garage Door?

August 29, 2009

Your garage door is one of the most important features of your home’s exterior. It is the largest movable object on your home. But it is also equally important from an interior point of view. Therefore, it is wise to consider several factors before purchasing a garage door. In today’s world of ever rising heating costs, it is important to purchase a garage door with a high R value (resistance to heat flow). This may cost a little more initially, but will pay for itself in no time as a result of fuel savings. It is a good idea to buy the highest R value that you can afford. If you have plans on heating and / or cooling our garage this may be well worth the money. Keep in mind the tax incentive a savings of up to $1,500 for some select garage doors purchased through December 31, 2010.

A garage door can help to improve the overall facade of your home. Because garage doors now come in a wide variety of styles and colors, a garage door purchase can involve making quite a few choices. The style of your home will influence your options to a large extent. This means selecting a corresponding panel style. Garage door panel styles range from “flush”, “raised panels” all the way to more elaborate panel styles, including wood, wood appliqué, copper clad, Exquisite and ideal faux barn doors or old country doors complimented with exterior ornamental hardware, faux wood paint finishes. And more coming out at the end of summer, the FeTerra and the Canyon Ridge
